FRPC files submissions on OMNI and the basic obligation to serve in telecommunications

FRPC intervened on Friday, July 10, 2015 in support of an application by Unifor Local 723 which asks the CRTC to hold a public hearing into Rogers’ decision to cancel all local news at its five ethnic, free over-the-air TV stations, known as the OMNI stations.

FRPC also filed comments on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, regarding Canadian telecommunications companies’ basic obligation to serve.  FRPC supports the inclusion of wireless telephone and broadband internet service as part of the the basic service obligation; we also asked the CRTC to develop a policy for payphones to ensure the continued availability of this low-cost, reliable telephone service.  (Earlier in 2015 FRPC filed a comment and reply regarding notification requirements for the removal of the last payphone in communities.)
